Young Lawyers: Naming the Stress and Building Resilience

The Buncombe County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division is pleased to announce it will offer a FREE CLE to young lawyers (attorneys under the age of 37 or within their first 5 years of practice) this Friday, June 8, 2018. This CLE is approved for 3.00 hours of professional responsibility/ethics credit.

NOTE: We are also inviting any law students in the area (e.g. summer interns). Feel free to send them our way. Please just let me know so we have enough coffee for everyone.

A recent national landmark ABA study confirmed that lawyers are at the highest risk of any profession for issues like depression and alcoholism. Many of the skills that make us good lawyers also make us good at hiding these issues. This CLE will present attendees with personal stories of lawyers struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues told by the lawyers who lived it. Attendees will then take part in a two-hour presentation on mindfulness and neuroscience taught by Laura Mahr, of Conscious Legal Minds LLC. Laura will cover material related to how human brains–and lawyers’ brains in particular–are wired, and how our wiring impacts the way we practice law and experience our lives. Participating attorneys will then put the theory into practice and learn how to use tools to build resilience to stress and improve their mental health.

This FREE CLE will be held on June 8, 2018, from 8:30-12:15am and is free to Young Lawyers in Buncombe and Henderson Counties [AND LAW STUDENTS]. The YLD of Buncombe County would like to thank The Van Winkle Law Firm for hosting this event, which will be located at 11 N. Market Street, Asheville, NC 28801. A light breakfast and drinks (i.e. lots of coffee) will be provided.
