World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walk

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (“WEAAD”) is June 15, 2023.  WEAAD launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.  We are thrilled that after a three-year Covid hiatus, the event returns to Buncombe County this year.

This multigenerational event is free to all and will include information about how the abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of older adults impacts our community, with information from local agencies that offer actions and supports to prevent and stop elder abuse.  The event will feature live music from the Knotty G’s, as well as food and desserts from Doc Brown’s BBQ, Howdy Homemade Ice Cream and Small Cakes, face painting for the kids and young at heart, and of course – a WALK around Carrier Park!  We hope to see you there.

Planning organizations include Buncombe County Health and Human Services, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, Land of Sky Regional Council, Legal Aid of North Carolina, the Council on Aging of Buncombe County, the North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union, and The Van Winkle Law Firm and Mountain Care.
