Seeking Domestic Violence Prevention and Generalist Attorney

Pisgah Legal Services, a community-based, non-profit law firm which provides free civil legal assistance to low-income people in the area surrounding Asheville, North Carolina, has an opening for an attorney to serve a six-county area in the Blue Ridge Mountains, at its Hendersonville office. Travel within a one-hour radius of Hendersonville is required to serve very low-income clients in the region. More information about Pisgah Legal Services can be found at www.pisgahlegal.org.

Qualifications: N.C. licensed attorney or commitment to become licensed in N.C. promptly. Spanish language skills would be an asset, as would experience in addressing problems associated with extreme poverty through the law.

Salary/Benefits: Depending on experience. Excellent fringe benefits, including 401(k) retirement plan, as well as life, health, dental, and disability insurance.

Initially at least, approximately one-half of the attorney is needed for the Mountain Violence Prevention Project (MVPP) to work from the Hendersonville office. This attorney will handle cases in the state district courts. The MVPP helps victims of domestic violence and sexual assault escape violence and live independent of their abusers. MVPP strives to provide holistic services to clients through and beyond the initial court protective order. The other half of the attorney’s time is needed to work out of the Hendersonville office of Pisgah Legal Services, to handle general poverty law cases including landlord/tenant, consumer law, and public benefits issues.
