Opening for SOAR Caseworker
NOTICE OF JOB VACANCY
Disability/SOAR* Caseworker
Pisgah Legal Services, a community-based non-profit legal services agency that provides legal assistance on certain civil legal matters to low-income people living in western North Carolina seeks to hire a Disability/SOAR Caseworker or Advocate for people who are homeless to help them qualify for disability income and Medicaid. This position is new and the staff member will work out of the Hendersonville office of Pisgah Legal Services.
Qualifications: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; familiarity with basic word processing functions; experience with data entry; ability to understand, remember, and carry out complex instructions; skilled in office systems. Experience working and communicating with low-income, homeless, and mentally ill population required. High School diploma or completion of G.E.D. required. Medical, disability law, and/or case management experience would be helpful Attorneys with appropriate experience will be considered.
Responsibilities: Screen applicants for eligibility for disability benefits; assist clients with applications and appeals for Social Security Disability and Medicaid benefits; obtain all medical records; provide outreach and transportation assistance to disabled clients; work in one or more homeless shelters; communicate and interact effectively with a wide variety of people and organizations; research and develop case history and prepare summary in support of disabilities; perform various duties as needed and assigned.
Job Description: We are uncertain whether this will be a full-time position or 30-hour per week position. That will turn on other funding because the initial funding for this position does not cover all the costs of a full-time position for a year. Depending on the applicant pool and other funding, we may ask this person to handle other types of cases to make the job a full-time one.
Salary: Depends on experience. Excellent fringe benefits, including 401(k), health, dental, and disability insurance.
