Judicial Survey Reminder from Howard Gum, State Bar Councilor

Dear Buncombe County Bar Member:

The NCBA JPE Survey – Phase I, which asks lawyers to rate trial judges who will be on the ballot in 2014 and all Special Superior Court Judges, is underway and over 2000 lawyers have responded. I have completed my survey and want to share some personal observations.

1. This JPE survey process has been carefully vetted to ensure absolute confidentiality and anonymity. Over 20,000 people viewed the results of the survey during the 2012 election cycle at www.ElectNCJudges.org. Your opinion matters!

2. A review of our judges by thoughtful lawyers who know our judges, or who appear before them, or both, is an important component to maintaining an excellent judiciary. Professional contact is not restricted to courtroom appearances, and you do not need to rate a judge in all categories.

3. The survey really does take only a few minutes. It’s very easy to complete.

4. You will have an opportunity to rate the challengers in March 2014 in the JPE Survey – Phase II.

On November 4, bcrossland@bdo.com will send a reminder email with a survey link to all who have not responded. If you have not received or misplaced an email invitation, please check your spam folder or send an email request to dbohm@ncbar.org to request an electronic or paper copy.

I encourage you to complete your survey and to urge your friends to do likewise.

Regards,

Howard L. Gum
