Garrett Artz Selected as Chair of the Pro Bono Committee

IMG_6744 (1)Liz Franks, who has served as Chair of the Buncombe County Bar Pro Bono Committee for the past two years, is pleased to announce that Garrett Artz has been selected to serve as her replacement as Chair of the committee. Garrett, a member of the Buncombe County Bar since 2008, brings a wealth of varied experience to the position.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Navy Flight Training as a Designated Naval Aviator, Garrett served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander from 1993 to 2004 as a senior manager, flight instructor, and aircraft commander. During his service, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

After obtaining his J.D. degree from North Carolina Central School of Law in 2008, Garrett and his family, his wife, Dr. Evelyn Artz, and their three sons, moved to Asheville. Soon thereafter, he was hired by Pisgah Legal Services, where he served as Housing and Consumer Law staff attorney, and also managed administration of the Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyer (MAVL) and Hotline pro bono programs.

After leaving PLS in 2011, Garrett served as corporate counsel for a military defense contractor until 2014. In 2015, Garrett co-founded and now serves as President of Connect Enka, a local non-profit that supports active (walking and biking) transportation.
Garrett has also been an active volunteer in our community, serving as an America Walks Walking College Fellow, an active volunteer through the MAVL and Hotline programs, a member of the United Way Peaks Development Committee, and as a League Cycling instructor.
