This training is provided to support volunteer attorneys who advise and represent low-income clients through the Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyer (MAVL) Program (including the Pro Bono Hotline program) and any other interested attorney.  It is an overview of current civil legal issues affecting low-income people, so private attorneys can better serve their clients and make appropriate referrals to Pisgah Legal Services.

The credit portion of the CLE includes presentations on helping clients living in poverty and holistic legal assessment, so that volunteer attorneys are able to help low-income clients identify all of their legal issues and other needs including income, benefits, financial, housing, mental and physical, violence, and education.  The CLE also includes sessions on debtor-creditor issues along with other consumer legal issues, housing law, public benefits, domestic violence/family law, and an hour-long ethics portion. The CLE is worth five hours of general credit, and one hour of ethics credit.

The fee for this CLE program is completely waived for any attorney who agrees to accept the referral of two MAVL cases by November 2018 or to serve on the Pro Bono Hotline.
