David Gantt Receives Prestigious NCBA Honor

Asheville lawyer David Gantt recently became the sixteenth (16th) lawyer recipient of the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award.  The McKnight Award was established by the NC Bar Association to recognize lawyers whose trustworthiness, respectful and courteous treatment of all people, enthusiasm for intellectual achievement, and commitment to excellence in work, and service to the profession and community during a multi-faceted accomplished life, inspire others.  Gantt was selected by a committee of his peers and became the first lawyer from the NC mountains to ever receive the Award.  He stated that “while I am certain that other lawyers are likely more deserving, I will proudly and humbly accept the Award on behalf of all lawyers who work in small law offices.”

In addition to practicing trial work for over forty-two (42) years, Gantt served on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners for over twenty (20) years and Chair the Land of Sky Regional Council of Governments for several years.  He has consistently been involved in community work as a soccer, basketball, and baseball youth league coach, PTA President at Glen Arden Elementary, UNC Chapel Hill Parent’s Council, Chair of March of Dimes Walk, Elben Charities Board.  Professionally, Gantt served as the first editor of the Buncombe County Bar newsletter, speaker at over twenty (20) legal continuing education seminars, Chair of the Disability Advocacy section of the Advocates for Justice trial lawyer group, member of NC Pro Bono Honor Society, NC Bar Association Citizen Lawyer (charter class), General Practice Hall of Fame, Leaders in the Law, and is regularly listed as a “SuperLawyer” and among the “Best Lawyers in America.”  He is the recipient of an honorary lifetime NAACP membership, Minnie Jones Social Justice Award, MLK Humanitarian Award, WNC Elected Official of the Year, Charles Campbell Leadership Award, Southern Appalachian Highland Legacy Award along with other community recognitions.  Gantt was also a popular speaker with many talks to government, historical, political, and motivational group meetings.

When asked for advice on practicing law, Gantt notes that since we have been blessed with the privilege of helping the community with our legal training for a good income, we have an equally strong moral obligation to give back to that community.  Community service can take many forms short of holding public office and each lawyer should decide what type of service s/he wishes to offer the community they live in.  Using our legal and personal skills to support, lead, organize, or advise community groups makes our neighborhood, town, city, state a better place to grow up, go to school, work, and retire.

Gantt formally received the McKnight Award at the annual NC Bar Association Convention in Wilmington, NC on June 23, 2022.
