Catch Up With The Clerk – February 27, 2023

Hello Buncombe Bar! On this week’s edition of Catch Up with the Clerk, I will re-introduce you to the assistant clerks who will be presenting at the CLE this Friday!

Brooke Hazel is an assistant clerk in criminal records. She started in 2010 and became an assistant in 2021. In her free time she enjoys making memories with her husband, her family and her two dogs!

Neekou Gardner is the assistant clerk who presides over special proceedings hearings. She first joined the clerk’s office in 2020 and was promoted to be an assistant in 2023. She was raised in the Netherlands where her LLB and LLM there. She came to Wake Forest to get an additional LLM where she met her husband Tyler. Tyler is an attorney and career law clerk for Chief Federal Judge Reidinger. They have two sons together.

Scott Coates is an assistant clerk in our Estates Department. He joined the Clerk’s Office in 2015 and became an assistant in 2018. He enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, and kayaking.

Brenda Davis is the assistant clerk in civil records. She started at the Clerk’s office in 2008 and became an assistant in 2022. Her ancestors migrated to the Mountains of NC in the mid 1700s, and she grew up in Mitchell County. She has two sons and two grandsons. She has a (very old) degree in Business Computer Programing. For relaxation she quilts, crochets, knits, embroider, weave, paint concrete statuaries, read, and listen to music.

Jean Marie Christy is the Clerk of Superior Court. She took office on April 1, 2023. Prior to that she was an assistant public defender here in Buncombe County. She loves to read, watch reality tv, and hang out with her dog, Frank.

Additionally, AOC will be meeting with judicial leadership on March 8. This meeting will be our first official meeting with AOC about the eCourts rollout. After 3/8, Catch up with the Clerk will become your weekly eCourts updates!

I look forward to seeing you all March 1, when the Bar is hosting the “Practicing in Front of the Clerk” CLE at 12 p.m. in courtroom 2C. There will be no Catch up with the Clerk next week, but I will be back on 3/12!
