Mr. Lucien Capone III
About
Lucien “Skip” Capone III was University Counsel with the University of North Carolina at Asheville from April of 2010 to April 2014. He then served as Special Counsel to the Chancellor until his retirement in September 2014. Prior to that he was the University Counsel at the University of North Carolina Greensboro from 1991 until his move to Asheville.
From 1977 until 1991 he was employed by the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and was Special Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Corrections Section from 1986 through 1991. He received his B.A. degree from North Carolina State University in 1973 and his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1977. He became a member of the North Carolina Bar Association shortly after joining the Attorney General’s Office and was a member of the Appellate Rules Committee for several years. He has served as a public member on two accreditation boards, CACREP from 1995 to 2001 and ACOTE from 2003 to 2006 and was a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) Board of Directors from 1999 to 2002.
Capone was a Navy Reservist in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp from 1982 to 2002. He served on active duty during Desert Storm and retired as a Commander. Capone has also served on a number of UNC General Administration Committees and Task Forces, including a period as Chair of the Computer and Internet Legal Issues Committee (CILIC) in the late 1990s, and as a member of the UNC Campus Safety Task Force in 2004. Mr. Capone received the North Carolina Bar Association’s Citizen Lawyer award in 2008. He is a General Aviation pilot and holds a flight instructor certificate.
