Seeking Full Time Legal Assistant

The Van Winkle Law Firm is seeking a full-time Legal Assistant to join our team in our Asheville, NC office.

This position provides support in a fast paced, dynamic environment. The successful candidate will be self-motivated with a hands-on, positive, “can-do” approach.
Compensation is dependent on experience and skill set.

The position is full-time (40-hours per week).

Duties include:

Maintain positive and responsive contact with clients and observe confidentiality of client matters.
Serve as liaison between firm, clients, governmental offices, lending institutions, insurance agencies, and other parties
Prepare correspondence and reports
Create documents using legal formats and terminology, draft letters, memos, documents, and various other correspondence for attorneys and proofread all work
Organize and maintain electronic data
Manage traditional administrative needs
Manage daily workflow including scheduling appointments, maintaining calendars, and being a helpful resource to the supervising attorney
Demonstrate good judgment and professionalism, and exhibit flexibility and versatility to provide support
Demonstrate strong reasoning and resolution skills
Qualifications for this position include:

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required, advanced skills or education is a plus
Previous legal assistant experience preferred
Prior paralegal experience desired
Willingness to learn the business practice and its systems
Exceptional attention to detail, excellent organizational and communication skills, and proficient word processing skills
Ability to work well independently, be responsive, and manage deadlines
Exceptional flexibility and strong prioritization skills and the capability to adapt to change

The Van Winkle Law Firm Welcomes Attorney Nevin Wisnoski

The Van Winkle Law Firm announced today that Nevin Wisnoski has joined the firm as an associate attorney in its litigation practice group, where he focuses on federal Indian and tribal law, commercial disputes, and a variety of tort matters. Prior to joining The Van Winkle Law Firm, Wisnoski clerked for a boutique federal Indian law firm in South Florida, working on various federal, state and tribal matters. These include cases heard in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Supreme Court, Federal Tax Court and the Third District Court of Appeal of Florida.

Wisnoski obtained his Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from North Carolina State University in 2016 and his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Miami School of Law in 2019. He is an Asheville native and a graduate of Asheville High School.

The Van Winkle Law Firm announced today that Matthew Kitchens has joined the firm as a senior attorney in its litigation practice group. Kitchens focuses his practice on general civil litigation, including significant personal injuries, eminent domain defense and land use litigation. He also has extensive experience in criminal defense cases and federal and state appeals.

Originally from Mississippi, Kitchens earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1995, and his Juris Doctor with distinction from the Mississippi College School of Law in 2002. He served as a law clerk at the Mississippi Supreme Court, then practiced in his family firm until relocating to Asheville in 2019. He is licensed to practice law in all courts in Mississippi and North Carolina, and has tried cases and handled appeals throughout both states.
