Allen Stahl + Kilbourne Expands into the Triad and Announces New Attorney Scott Burger

Big news! Allen Stahl + Kilbourne expands into The Triad! We are thrilled to announce Scott Burger as our newest attorney. Scott shares our passion for dedicated client service and our affinity for good beer. In fact, for nearly a decade, he has practiced under the name the “NC Beer Lawyer” and will bring that moniker to Allen Stahl + Kilbourne which will be the new home of the “NC Beer Lawyers.”


“We are excited to have Scott on board and expand our reach across the state. It allows us to offer our services to a broader geographic client base, and gives Scott’s existing clients new depths and breadths of expertise,” says Derek Allen.


Scott ran his own solo practice for 9 years before joining us here at ASK. He represents both buyers and sellers in commercial real estate closings. He assists small businesses and entrepreneurs with business formation, commercial lease reviews, and general legal advice for starting and running their businesses. Scott also works with craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries in every stage of their life cycles, but particularly enjoys working with start-ups.


Scott is a Michigander! He was raised in Okemos, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in history.  He continued his education and obtained his law degree from Michigan State University College of Law.


Scott is licensed to practice law in North Carolina, a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the Forsyth County Bar Association/31st Judicial District Bar, and the American Bar Association.  He is also a Certified Beer Server in the Cicerone Certification Program.

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne Welcomes Hannah Michalove

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne welcomes Hannah Michalove to the firm! Hannah focuses her practice on complex civil litigation and represents clients in a broad range of civil matters, including shareholder/owner disputes, zoning and real estate disputes, and appeals matters at all appellate levels.

“Hannah has shown herself to be an outstanding writer and critical thinker,” says Derek. “Her significant legal writing experience at the Federal level will be a valuable asset to our clients with litigation needs. We are delighted to have her on board!”

Prior to joining Allen Stahl + Kilbourne, Hannah served as a law clerk to the Honorable Herman N. Johnson, Jr. of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.  She graduated from Campbell University School of Law, magna cum laude, in 2019, where she served as circulation editor of the Campbell Law Review.  Hannah earned a B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2011, after which she spent five years working as an immigrants’ rights advocate.  Hannah is fluent in Spanish.

Hannah relocated to Asheville in 2021, where her extended family has lived for generations.

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne, PLLC welcomes new attorney Alicia E. Sessoms to the firm!

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne, PLLC is excited to announce our latest addition to the ASK legal team, attorney Alicia E. Sessoms. Sessoms recently earned her law degree, with honors, from North Carolina Central University. She has a Bachelor’s in English from Warren Wilson College, in Swannanoa, NC.

Prior to attending law school (and during), she owned and operated restaurants in Asheville, NC with her business partner, Jacob Sessoms. They opened their first restaurant, Table, in 2005. They later opened the restaurant which became All Day Darling in 2008, the Imperial Life Cocktail Lounge in 2012, and El Gallo in 2020. Alicia remains the business administrator for all their business entities.

“We are very happy to welcome Alicia and know she will be a great addition to the firm. Her background as a restaurant owner in Asheville brings us a unique perspective that will benefit our clients immensely,” said Stahl.

Sessoms says “The decision to go to law school was borne out of my desire to be of greater service to the unique needs of small business owners in and around Asheville. COVID-19 is just yet another example of the difficulties small business can unexpectedly face which require dynamic solutions and great adaptability to survive. I am interested in helping business owners navigate this complex landscape.”

Alicia has two sons, Dallas (23) and Atticus (21), who are the joys of her life. She also has 2 sweet dogs and a deep love of these mountains which she’s called home since 1998. Before opening Table, she taught English at Asheville High School.

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne, PLLC proudly announces firm’s newest partner, Robert “Bo” Carpenter!

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne, PLLC, is proud to announce Robert “Bo” Carpenter as the firm’s newest partner, joining Derek Allen, Jeff Stahl, and James Kilbourne. Bo joined the predecessor firm Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl in January of 2017 to further grow his employment law, business law, and general civil litigation practice areas.

“Two years ago, when Derek, Jamie and I imagined a new kind of law firm to put client relationships first, we had no idea what the future held. As we have doubled in size, Bo has been part of the transition and growth of the firm every step of the way.  We are excited to announce his partnership,” Managing Partner, Jeff Stahl explained.

A Western North Carolina native, Bo was former Treasurer of the bar and a regular on the Legal Elite list. He is also proud of his work as former president of the Our Voice board, a non-profit crisis intervention and prevention agency which serves survivors of sexual violence.

“I am excited to join Derek, Jamie, and Jeff as partners of this dynamic and growing law firm. I also appreciate the past and continued support of this magnificent Bar through referrals, encouragement, and friendship as I reach this career milestone,” said Carpenter.

Damie A. Sesay has joined Allen Stahl + Kilbourne

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne is pleased to announce that attorney Damie A. Sesay has joined our firm. As managing partner Jeff Stahl explains, “We couldn’t be more excited to add Damie to the team. Her knowledge and expertise will be of great benefit to our clients.”

Damie Sesay is an experienced litigator. She began her legal career in the Washington, D.C. area as a prosecutor where she gained invaluable litigation experience. Damie then served as in-house counsel for a large insurance company. Since moving to North Carolina in 2016, Damie served as an Assistant Attorney General where she defended state agencies before the Industrial Commission. Most recently, she practiced in the areas of liability defense and litigation. In this capacity, she defended large businesses and insurance companies in a variety of matters in administrative, state, and federal courts. Her vast experience has led to several speaking engagements and publications.

As Stahl explains, “Adding Damie as our 12th attorney, allows the firm to increase the legal services we can provide our varied client base of businesses and individuals. She brings depth and breadth of experience to Allen Stahl + Kilbourne and will thrive on the challenge of tackling complex legal issues in representing our clients to the fullest.”

Damie obtained her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma, and her law degree from American University Washington College of Law.  While in law school, she participated in the Moot Court Honor Society, the Marshall Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, and the General Practice Clinic. She also received the Pro Bono Honors Pledge Award for her commitment to community service.

Damie currently serves on the Board for the Nineteen Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization in Nigeria. NYF’s mission is to reach high school and college-aged women by providing vocational training and basic resources these women may not otherwise have access to.

Damie has called Asheville home since 2019, and lives with her husband and two children.
