Clifton Williams, Former UNC Asheville Legal Counsel, joins Allen Stahl + Kilbourne

Clifton Williams has joined Allen Stahl + Kilbourne (ASK) as its newest attorney starting June 1, 2020.  Williams has most recently served as University Counsel on the UNC Asheville legal staff where he has worked since 2014, including three years as the University’s chief legal officer. He brings an array of government, military, and private practice experience to ASK, having previously worked in North Carolina State University’s Office of General Counsel and, before his time in public service, with Bachman and Swanson in Durham.

“We are excited to have Clifton join our team,” says ASK partner Derek Allen. “I have gotten to know and admire Clifton through his role at my alma mater, UNC Asheville. It is clear to me that Clifton’s skill set, experience, and connections in Western North Carolina will make him a perfect fit for our practice.”

Williams will focus on education law, employment law, corporate work, real estate, and other general business areas, while serving and expanding the firm’s client base in craft beverage, real estate development, manufacturing, outdoor gear, and other lifestyle-oriented businesses.

Allen Stahl + Kilbourne is a full-service law firm covering a number of practice areas, including real estate, construction, craft beverage, creditor rights in bankruptcy and debt collection, intellectual property, employment and labor, education, estate planning and administration, and general business and corporate matters. The firm has strong connections to Asheville and Western North Carolina, as many ASK attorneys have practiced, lived, or learned here since the 1970s.

Derek Allen joins Kilbourne & Stahl

Jeff Stahl and James W. Kilbourne, Jr., partners of Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl are excited to announce that Derek Allen is joining with them to form Allen Stahl + Kilbourne.

Derek Allen recently left Ward and Smith after 10 years to fulfill a career long desire of being in his own law practice here in Asheville.  Allen plays a unique role in the craft beer/craft beverage industry in Asheville, and across North Carolina and the U.S.

Derek explained, “Helping to build the Asheville office for Ward and Smith has been the highlight of my career (so far). I am proud of what we have made. We changed the way law is practiced in WNC.”

Derek Allen has deep community connections, doing his undergraduate work at UNC Asheville and returning to Asheville with a couple of colleagues to open an outpost for Ward and Smith.  He is president of the board of LEAF, president of the board at the Wortham Center for Performing Arts and a member of the board for the United Way of Asheville & Buncombe County.  Allen is counsel to and a board member of the Asheville Brewers Alliance. He is also counsel to the Asheville-Buncombe Youth Soccer Association and had early involvement in the Asheville-Buncombe Regional Sports Commission. He also serves on the UNCA Foundation Board.

Best Lawyers, an organization that produces a respected peer-reviewed recommended lawyers guide each year, named Allen the Lawyer of the Year for 2020 in the land use and zoning law category for Asheville.

Stahl and Kilbourne purchased Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl from its founder Robert Dungan, who remains with the firm.  Dungan was known as one of the early leaders in the representation of community and condo associations.

Allen and Kilbourne have been friends since they met at the UNC School of Law.  Kilbourne is the immediate past president of the Buncombe County Bar.  He is a member of the Appellate Rules Committee and the secretary of the Appellate Practice Section Council.  He is also known for his work on Indian jurisdiction.

Stahl, a commercial litigator, serves as the managing partner of Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl and Allen Stahl + Kilbourne.  Under Stahl’s leadership, Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl recently moved to new offices on 20 Town Mountain Road, which will be the home of Allen Stahl + Kilbourne.  “When we found new space and finally had the ability to expand, Jamie and I discussed possible new ventures.  Working with Derek was at the very top of our list,” Stahl explained.

Attorneys Bo Carpenter, Megan Farley, and Ed Flowers will remain with the new entity, which will keep the current telephone number unchanged.  The new webpage will be

Dungan Kilbourne & Stahl is Moving

After years on Rankin Avenue in Downtown Asheville, Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl is moving to 20 Town Mountain Road near the Tunnel.  The new location will feature ample free parking, three conference rooms, and room to expand.

At the end of business on Wednesday, August 14th, the firm will close the Rankin Avenue office. Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl will be closed and the telephone system will be down on August 15 and 16 for the big move.  The firm will reopen at the new location on Monday, August 19th.  The main telephone number (828-254-4778) and all direct dials will be unchanged.

“This new space will be transformational for our firm,”  managing Partner Jeff Stahl explained.  “The size and logistical constraints of our Rankin Avenue office created challenges for our clients and constrained our ability to grow.  This Town Mountain office will make it possible for the firm to expand to better serve our clients, to introduce new levels of collaboration between attorneys, and to remain on the front edge of legal technology.”

Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl represents clients in real estate, community associations, complex litigation, appeals, mediation, and dozens of other areas.  Partner James W. Kilbourne, Jr., of Dungan, Kilbourne & Stahl is the immediate past president of the Buncombe Bar.

The new address of Dungan Kilbourne & Stahl (as of August 19) will be:
