Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite is a listing of the state’s top lawyers categorized by practice area chosen through a balloting process which includes all lawyers living in North Carolina. First published in 2002, Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite is the only award of its type that gives every active lawyer in the state the opportunity to participate. The single question ballot asks lawyers to nominate the best lawyer with whom they worked and observed firsthand in each of the categories listed in the Legal Elite. Lawyers are not permitted to list themselves though they can select members of their firm if they also list lawyers outside their firm in the same categories. Within firm selections are given less weight than non-firm selections. The lawyer who receives the most votes in a category becomes a member of Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite Hall of Fame. Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite is published in January each year.
Howard Gum is a North Carolina Board Certified Legal Specialist in Family Law and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Practicing law since 1976, Howard has extensive experience representing divorcing spouses from all walks of life. He focuses his practice exclusively on matters involving issues of marriage and divorce with clients throughout western North Carolina. David Hillier is a North Carolina Board Certified Legal Specialist in Bankruptcy Law serving clients throughout Western North Carolina. Dave has been practicing law in Asheville for 35 years.
Patrick McCroskey is a North Carolina Board Legal Specialist in Family Law and Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Janet Amburgey is a 2008 graduate of the Appalachian School of Law. Janet focuses her practice in the area of family law, Poised for a bright future, inclusion in the 2015 Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite Young Guns section is Janet’s first peer review honor. Though pleased with the acknowledgement of her fellow lawyers, the Legal Elite was not Janet’s biggest accomplishment of the year. In October, she became a first time mom. Janet has many “firsts” ahead of her in 2015.
