A memorial service for George Ward Hendon is scheduled for Monday, September 30, at 4 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville.

| George Ward Hendon passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 26, 2013, in South Dakota on a pheasant hunt, surrounded by his friends doing something he dearly loved.Ward was born in Asheville, NC, on September 16, 1941. He was the son of the late John William Hendon and Mary Adams Ward Hendon and resided in Asheville, the town he loved. He was quick to tell you he was a “native son”.
He was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School (1959); the University of Tennessee (B.S. 1963); and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law (J.D. 1967). Ward was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 1967 and was admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He practiced law in Asheville for 45 years with the firm of Adams, Hendon, Carson, Crow & Saenger. He loved the firm and the practice of law and was well-respected by clients and adversaries alike. He was a member of the North Carolina State Bar and the Buncombe County Bar Association, serving as its President from 1986-1987. He served as a member (1993-1999) and chair (1998-1999) of IOLTA (Interest on Lawyer’s Trust Accounts); as a member of the Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the North Carolina Bar (1983-1989); and as a member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He was the President of Pisgah Legal Services. In recognition of his outstanding community service efforts, Ward was given the North Carolina Bar Association Centennial Award in 2007. More than anything, Ward loved being with his family and friends. He was a devoted husband of 49 years to Harriet Cobb Hendon, who survives him. He is also survived by a daughter Mary Hahn Fetter and her husband, Kris, of Charlotte, NC and a son George Ward Hendon, Jr. and his wife Clara of Los Angeles, CA, and five grandchildren (Isabel Cobb Fetter, Thomas Ward Fetter, and Charles Harris Fetter of Charlotte; and Margaret Beverly Hendon and George Ward Hendon, III, of Los Angeles, CA). He is also survived by his brother, William Martin Hendon of Tryon, NC. “Big Ward” was revered by his family. Ward was on the Vestry and a Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville and a Trustee for the Episcopal Church, Diocese of Western North Carolina. He was a member of the Biltmore Forest Country Club. He was also a member of Seniard Creek Farm and member of the Rhododendron Royal Brigade of Guards. Funeral services will be held at 4pm on Monday, September 30 at Trinity Episcopal Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. R. Scott White. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or to Pisgah Legal Services. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family. |
