Applications Accepted for Board Certification

Becoming a board certified specialist is one great way to be recognized for your dedication to a particular practice area. The specialization program identifies North Carolina lawyers who are experienced and knowledgeable in fourteen practice areas (listed below), thereby providing clients with a reliable credential. Specialists can advertise their specialty certification and are included in our online searchable directory. Only five percent of qualified NC lawyers have earned the distinction of board certification.

Do I Qualify?
If you have practiced law for five years, during which time you were substantially involved in the specialty practice area and acquired sufficient CLE hours in the past three years, you may qualify to become board certified. You can learn more about the program at There, you’ll find details about the application process and requirements. The 2021 application period is open through May 3. *Early application discount –April 16.

Not Yet?
If you’re not at the five-year mark or would like to apply in a future year, complete our Declaration of Intent form. There’s no fee to file and we’ll email you reminders, information about CLEs, notes about upcoming deadlines, and more to keep you on track.
